This image was first published in 1941 in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men co-authored by James Agee and Walker Evans. The book which documents the lives of three Alabama tenant farm families remains in print.

It was included in the major Evans retrospective and the accompanying catalog at MoMA in 1971.

In 2000 the US Postal Service issued as set of 20 commemorative stamps honoring great American 
photographers. This image appears on the Evans stamp. It is a classic example of Evans dictum that interiors may be powerful portraits of their inhabitants
