Born in 1961, Mark Dion is an artist whose work addresses the politics of representation in history and science. He explores the absurdity of classification systems and draws from fields as varied as ecology, botany, and ethnography. Dion has been commissioned to create works for Aldrich Museum of Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. Since 1985 he has exhibited internationally, in major museums and galleries worldwide, including solo exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver; Galleria Emi Fontana, Milan; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio; Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York; and American Fine Arts, Co., New York. He received his education from the School of Visual Arts and Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program in New York, as well as the University of Hartford in Connecticut.
