Karim Rashid, who is half-Egyptian and half-English, was born in Cairo in 1960 and raised in Canada, where he received a Bachelor of Industrial Design from Carlton University in 1982. In 1993, he opened a design practice in New York City. Rashid brings his design sensibility to the fields of product and interior design, fashion, furniture, lighting and art and, most recently, the realm of architecture, with designs for the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia and Semiramis hotel in Athens, for which Rashid recently received a Sleep ‘05 European Hotel Design Award. His work has won numerous other awards.
