Born in 1938, Sylvia Plimack Mangold grew up in New York City, and is married to the painter Robert Mangold, whom she met while studying at Yale. First known for her geometric renderings of the floors of her house and studio (often coupled with borders of masking tape, mirrors, and rulers) in the 1960s and early 1970s, she later moved on to portraying landscapes. Living in Washingtonville, west of the Hudson River Valley, much of her work since then has depicted nature near her home. Since the 1980s, she has focused on the depiction of trees.
