Artist statement about the project.
For over two decades, Alfredo Jaarís work has focused on photography as political witness. Born in Chile in 1956, he has traveled to Latin America, Asia and Africa to investigate issues as diverse as the effect of toxic waste on a village in Africa, the miners of Sierra Pelada, Brazil, the conditions of Vietnamese refugees incarcerated in Hong Kong, and most recently, the genocide in Rwanda. In all his work, Jaar has focused on the imbalance of power between industrialized and developing nations, and has used his hybrid of installation, photography, sculpture and public art in order to raise consciousness about these issues. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2000 and has also been honored with a New York State Council of the Arts Grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Recent projects include The Cloud, which was presented at InSite 2000 in San Diego and Let There Be Light at the Badischer Kunstverein in Karlsruhe, Germany. Alfredo Jaarís work is represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Daros Foundation, Zurich, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, MCA Chicago and the Musée d’Art Contemporain, Montreal.
