William Bailey was born in Iowa in 1930, and was educated at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Kansas and Yale University. He is best known for paintings, prints and drawings of still lifes of pots, jugs, eggs, and bowls, in addition to the the figure. Bailey taught at Indiana University and Yale where he briefly served as Dean of the School of Art. Since 1979, he has served as the Kingman Brewster Professor of Art at the Yale University School of Art. Bailey’s works are in several public and private collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; the St. Louis Art Museum; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Wichita Art Museum, Wichita, Kansas; and the Yale University Art Gallery. William Bailey is represented by Betty Cunningham Gallery, New York.
