Wayne Thiebaud
Untitled from Jean Anthelme Brilllat-Savarin’s The Physiology of Taste with Art By Wayne Thiebaud, 1994
Lithograph on Rives BFK, Edition of 20, 20 x 16”
Estimated value: $3,000
Tentative starting bid: $1,200

Wayne Thiebaud worked in several fields relating to the arts before actually becoming an artist in 1947. He even served in the Air Force and painted murals for the army between 1942 and 1945. Thiebaud first emerged as a nationally recognized artist during the 1950s Pop Art movement and is most famous for his thickly painted still-lifes of desserts and junk food. More recently, Thiebaud has become known for his “Californian” style that combines intense light and color to form stylized landscapes and cityscapes of California.

Thiebaud's work can be found in collections around the country, including the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum.

To learn more about Wayne Thiebaud, see the press release for the Whitney Museum's retrospective of his work in 2001.
