![]() Tom Sachs Tom Sachs, born in New York in 1966, studied at the Architectural Association in London and received his B.A. from Bennington College in Vermont. Best known for his sculptural assemblages, he manipulates images taken from contemporary popular culture to comment on society's commercialism and trendiness. His work has appeared in exhibitions at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art (Art at the Edge of the Law) at SITE Santa Fe, at the 2004 Sao Paolo Bienniale, and is in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museum. Sachs is one of the recipients of the Marlin guns specially manufactured by Richard Klein as part of Artpsace's Factory Direct: New Haven exhibition. He is represented by Sperone Westwater in Chelsea. The piece Sachs has donated for the auction is from Nutsy's, an installation first exhibited in New York and subsequently shown at Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin. Nutsy's is a monumental installation composed of sculptural, mechanical, and video elements that range from reggae music blasting out of loudspeakers to models of Mies van der Rohe's furniture. Included in this made-up world in 1:25 scale are a McDonald's restaurant, a ghetto, a modernist art park, and Le Corbusier's Unite d'Habitation. These elements are connected by a network of roads that link slums with architectural icons, the lowbrow with the highbrow.
